Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives
in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same,
as follows:
Section 105 of chapter 41 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1986 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out the second, third and fourth sentences and inserting in place thereof the following three sentences:- In cities the board shall consist of the mayor and five members appointed by him and approved by the council, three of whom shall be veterans and two of whom shall not be veterans of any war; two members shall be appointed for one year, two for two years, and one for three years, and as the term of each member expires, a successor shall be appointed for three years. Any vacancy shall be filled in the same manner for the unexpired term. In towns the said board shall consist of the chairman of the board of selectmen, and five members elected by the town in the same manner as other town officers, three of whom shall be veterans and two of whom shall not be veterans of any war; two members shall be elected for one year, two for two years and one for three years, and as the term of each member expires, a successor shall be elected for three years; but until such board is elected, the selectmen may appoint a temporary board to serve until the next annual town meeting.
