CHAPTER 400 AN ACT REQUIRING THE USE OF THE NAMES OF BOTH SPOUSES ON CERTAIN DOCUMENTS AND COMMUNICATIONS.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

SECTION 1. Section 6 of chapter 14 of the General Laws is hereby amended by adding the following subparagraph:-

3. Shall require that whenever the department identifies a husband and wife in any communication, document or writing intended for use outside the department, the department shall use the name of both husband and wife and shall not use a legal phrase as a substitute for either name.

SECTION 2. Chapter 36 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 32 the following section:-

Section 32A. Whenever the register, in any communication, document or writing intended for use outside the registry, identifies a husband and wife, he shall use the name of both husband and wife and shall not use a legal phrase as a substitute for either name.

SECTION 3. Chapter 41 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 34A the following section:-

Section 34B. Whenever the assessor, in any communication, document or writing intended for use outside his department, identifies a husband and wife, he shall use the name of both husband and wife and shall not use a legal phrase as a substitute for either name.

SECTION 4. Section 38A of said chapter 41 is hereby amended by adding the following paragraph:-

Whenever the collector of taxes, in any communication, document or writing intended for use outside his department, identifies a husband and wife, he shall use the name of both husband and wife and shall not use a legal phrase as a substitute for either name.

SECTION 5. Chapter 217 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 22 the following section:-

Section 22A. Whenever the register, in any communication, document or writing intended for use outside the registry, identifies a husband and wife, he shall use the name of both husband and wife and shall not use a legal phrase as a substitute for either name.
