Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives
in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same,
as follows:
SECTION 1. Subsection (b) of section 2 of chapter 686 of the acts of 1970 is hereby amended by striking out, in lines 6, 13, 25, 29, 30, 31, 33 and 35, the word "district", each time it appears, and inserting in place thereof, in each instance, the following word:- precinct.
SECTION 2. Said subsection (b) of said section 2 of said chapter 686 is hereby further amended by striking out, in line 19, the word "fourteen" and inserting in place thereof the following word:- twenty-one.
SECTION 3. Said chapter 686 is hereby further amended by striking out section 3 and inserting in place thereof the following section:-
Section 3. The board of selectmen shall, pursuant to the provisions of chapter fifty-four of the General Laws, divide the town into the minimum number of precincts.
SECTION 4. The first paragraph of section 4 of said chapter 686 is hereby amended by striking out the first sentence and inserting in place thereof the following sentence:- At the annual town election held in the year nineteen hundred and ninety-four and at each town election next following a redivision of the town into precincts, eighteen town meeting members shall be elected from each such precinct.
SECTION 5. Said first paragraph of said section 4 of said chapter 686 is hereby further amended by striking out, in line 3, in line 5, the second time it appears, and in line 7 the word "three" and inserting in place thereof, in each instance, the following word:- six.
SECTION 6. Said section 4 of said chapter 686 is hereby further amended by striking out, in lines 4, 5, 7, 13 and 31 the word "district", each time it appears, and inserting in place thereof, in each instance, the following word:- precinct.
SECTION 7. Said section 4 of said chapter 686 is hereby further amended by striking out the second and third paragraphs and inserting in place thereof the following two paragraphs:-
Every five years, commencing with the year two thousand, the registrars of voters shall determine the number of representative town meeting members to which each precinct shall be entitled at subsequent elections. The number of town meeting members to which each precinct shall be entitled of the total of one hundred and eight members shall be in the same ratio as the population of each precinct bears to the population of the town as a whole.
Whenever the town is redivided, the terms of all incumbent town meeting members shall be terminated and the provisions of this section shall apply insofar as applicable.
SECTION 8. Subsection (b) of section 9 of said chapter 686 is hereby amended by striking out, in line 5, the word "district" and inserting in place thereof the following word:- precinct.
