CHAPTER 171 AN ACT PROVIDING FOR THE ANNUAL OBSERVANCE OF MASSACHUSETTS EMERGENCY RESPONDERS MEMORIAL DAY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT WEEK.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

Chapter 6 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 15QQQ the following two sections:-

Section 15RRR. The governor shall annually issue a proclamation setting apart the second Sunday in May of each year as Massachusetts Emergency Responders Memorial Day to honor all paramedics, emergency medical and public safety personnel, national guard personnel on state active duty, disaster assistance volunteers, and emergency management personnel killed in the line of duty and recommending that said day be observed in an appropriate manner by the people.

Section 15SSS. The governor shall annually issue a proclamation calling for the proper observance of Emergency Management Week during the week following the second Sunday of May as a period for special attention to preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation to protect lives and property from natural and technological hazards. During said Emergency Management Week, public safety, emergency response and emergency management personnel shall make a reasonable effort to conduct public information programs, training exercises and other activities designed to educate and inform the public regarding the importance of preparedness for emergencies, mitigation, to reduce harmful effects of natural and technological hazards, and appropriate response and recovery actions in the event of emergencies in the home, workplace, neighborhood, community or region.
