Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives
in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same,
as follows:
SECTION 1. The commissioner of transportation in the city of Boston, may without further authority and without regard to any rule, standard or regulation made or enforced by the department of highways, establish safety zones on, at or near any public or private way in said city which is not a state highway, and with approval of the said department if the same is a state highway. Such safety zones shall be posted as having a speed limit of twenty miles per hour and the operation of a motor vehicle in such a zone at a speed exceeding twenty miles per hour shall be deemed a violation of section seventeen of chapter ninety of the General Laws. Said commissioner may adopt rules making safety zone designation apply only at particular times or on or between particular dates.
SECTION 2. The commissioner of transportation in the city of Boston may from time to time establish school zones under the procedures provided in section one, notwithstanding the provisions of section two of chapter eighty-five of the General Laws.
