On January 2, 2013, Senator Joan Lovely was sworn into her first term in the Massachusetts Senate. She represents the 2nd Essex District, comprised of Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield.

Prior to joining the Legislature, Senator Lovely served on the Salem City Council for over 15 years. She served as President of the City Council in 2001 and in 2012. Senator Lovely immersed herself in the Council’s work while serving as chairwoman of the Committee on Administration and Finance, the Committee on Ordinances, Licenses, and Legal Affairs, and the Committee on Community and Economic Development. In addition, Senator Lovely acted as the Council’s liaison to the Board of Directors for the Salem Council on Aging and to the city’s Commission on Disabilities. Her years of experience on the ground level of government have given the Senator a deep appreciation for the complexity and significance of government on the state level.

In addition to her career in public service, Senator Lovely is particularly proud to have volunteered for many years as a literacy buddy for children between grades one and four in the Salem public schools.
