A vacancy in the office of treasurer shall be filled in the same manner.

SECTION 2.  Notwithstanding section 1, the incumbent holding the office of town treasurer of the town of Hadley on the effective date of this act shall continue to hold that office and to perform the duties of that office until the expiration of the term for which the incumbent was elected, unless the incumbent sooner vacates the office. After the term of the incumbent town treasurer holding the office on the effective date of this act has expired or is sooner vacated, the select board shall appoint a treasurer in the manner set forth in section 1 of this act. In the event an incumbent town treasurer vacates that position before the expiration of the incumbent’s term of office, an interim town treasurer shall be appointed to serve.
