An Act to increase the fines for prostitution solicitation.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

Section 1.    Chapter 272 of the General Laws is hereby amended by striking out section 8, and inserting in place thereof the following section:— 

Section 8.

Notwithstanding any general or special law, a person convicted of the crime of soliciting for a prostitute under General Laws chapter 272, section 8 or otherwise shall be punished by imprisonment in the house of correction for not more than one (1) year and shall be punished by a fine of not less than five hundred dollars ($500.00) and not more than seven hundred fifty dollars ($750.00) for the first offense, not less than seven hundred fifty dollars ($750.00) and not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) for the second offense, and not less than one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) and not more than two thousand dollars ($2,000.00) for the third offense and every subsequent offense thereafter.

Section 8(a)          

Notwithstanding any general or special law, a person charged with the crime of soliciting for a prostitute under General Laws chapter 272, section 8 or otherwise shall, if the disposition of the charge is other than acquittal or dismissal, be assessed a civil fine of not less than two hundred dollars ($200.00) and not more than three hundred dollars ($300.00) for the first offense, not less than three hundred dollars ($300.00) and not more than five hundred dollars ($500.00) for the second offense, and not less than five hundred dollars ($500.00) and not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) for the third offense and every subsequent offense thereafter.
