An Act relative to fire escapes.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

Chapter 143 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 22 the following section:-

Section 22A.  Upon the transfer, lease or sale of a building or structure, all exterior bridges, steel or wooden stairways, fire escapes and egress balconies, which are used by any means of egress or escape from fire, shall be examined and tested, and certified for structural adequacy and safety every 5 years, by a Massachusetts registered professional engineer, or others qualified and acceptable to the building official.  Said engineer or others shall then submit an affidavit to the local building inspector.
