An Act relative to the New Bedford Police Association.

 

Whereas, The deferred operation of this act would tend to defeat its purpose, which is to provide benefits to the members of the New Bedford Police Association in relation to resignation, retirement or death, therefore it is hereby declared to be an emergency law, necessary for the immediate preservation of the public convenience.
 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the New Bedford Police Association, as established under chapter 401 of the acts of 1900, may upon the death of any retired member of the New Bedford police department who is a member in good standing of the association, after approval by the board of directors, pay to the beneficiary or beneficiaries named by the member the sum of $6,000 less such sum of money paid to the member upon his retirement pursuant to sections 2 or 3.

SECTION 2. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, upon the resignation or retirement of a member in good standing who has been a member of the New Bedford Police Association for not less than 10 years, the association may pay to the member a sum equal to $1,000 or $150 for each year of membership in the association, not to exceed 20 years, whichever is greater, following the approval of the board of directors.

SECTION 3. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, upon the resignation or retirement of a member in good standing who has been pensioned from the New Bedford police department due to an injury or disability, the New Bedford Police Association may pay to the member a sum equal to $1,000 or $150 for each year of membership in the association, not to exceed 20 years, whichever is greater, following the approval of the board of directors.

SECTION 4. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the New Bedford Police Association may, upon the death of an active member of the New Bedford police department who is in good standing of the association, pay to the beneficiary or beneficiaries named by the member a sum of $12,000.”

SECTION 5. Chapter 188 of the acts of 1969 is hereby repealed.
