An Act relative to high occupancy vehicle lanes on the Massachusetts Turnpike Corridor.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
SECTION 1. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation shall promulgate regulations requiring that the left lane of the Turnpike Corridor referenced in Section 3 of Chapter 81A be designated as a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lane.
SECTION 2. Vehicles utilizing the HOV lane on the Turnpike Corridor shall be required to utilize a Fast Lane transponder or another compatible device capable of electronic payment to an automated toll.
SECTION 3. Vehicles utilizing the HOV lane on the Turnpike Corridor must be less than 2.5 tons and have 2 or more occupants. Motorcycles, even with one rider, may utilize the HOV lane. Emergency vehicles, State Police patrols, and other law enforcement vehicles may only use this lane when responding to an emergency.
