In the Year Two Thousand Eleven

An Act relative to geography education in Massachusetts.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. The department of elementary and secondary education shall promulgate regulations relative to the enhancement of geography education in the Commonwealth.  Said regulations shall include the following requirements:

(a) Revision of the Massachusetts History and Social Sciences Framework to include the study of geography in each grade level;

(b) Inclusion of geography in the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System testing;

(c) Establishment of an additional licensure that teachers shall obtain in order to be qualified to teach geography;

(d) Inclusion of a member of the Massachusetts Geography Alliance on the Massachusetts History and Social Sciences Framework Committee.

SECTION 2. The first week of April shall be designated Massachusetts Geography Education week.
