An Act amending the sex offender registry statute to require immediate registration of sex offenders.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
SECTION 1. Section 178C of Chapter 6 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2010 Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting, after line 18, the following definition:-
“Local police department”, the police station located in the City or Town where the sex offender resides or if a City or Town has more than one police station, the local police department is the police station located in, or closest to, the zip code where the sex offender resides. If the sex offender does not reside in Massachusetts but works or attends an institution of higher learning in Massachusetts, the local police department is the police station in the City or Town where the sex offender works or attends an institution of higher learning; if the City or Town has more than one police station, the local police department is the police station in, or closest to, the zip code where the sex offender works or attends an institution of higher learning.
SECTION 2. Section 178F ½ of said chapter 6 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2010 Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting, in line 8, after the words, “data on file remains true and accurate” the following words:-
The local police department shall immediately register any sex offender appearing in person to fulfill his/her registration obligations, and shall provide a written receipt showing proof of registration.
