Section 53 of chapter 111 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2010 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out the seventh sentence and inserting in place thereof the following 2 sentences:- A dialysis unit shall have on duty sufficient direct care nursing personnel to ensure that all patients undergoing dialysis have nursing care available at all times provided by registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and other staff trained in chronic dialysis at an assigned level of no less than 1 direct patient care staff member assigned to directly care for no more than 3 patients at one time. As used in this section the term “direct patient care” shall mean hands-on care for the means of initiating and discontinuing dialysis, monitoring patients during treatment, and administering medications.
