SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the State-Saugus retirement board is hereby authorized and directed to retire John Coburn, a police officer in the town of Saugus who was injured by an assault on his person while in the performance of his duties, pursuant to chapter 402B of the Acts of 1985. Such retirement status shall become effective as of the date following the last day on which he received regular compensation; provided further, that such retirement status shall enable his stepson, Joseph L. Bryson, III, to receive a statutory preference in placement on all entry-level police officer eligible lists, notwithstanding the rate of compensation at which John Coburn received a retirement pension.
