An Act relative to the appointment of the Harbormaster in the City of New Bedford.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 19 of Chapter 102 of the General Laws, or of any other General or Special Law to the contrary, the following Act shall apply to the Harbormaster of the City of New Bedford. The Mayor of the City of New Bedford, with the approval of the City Council of the City of New Bedford, shall appoint the Harbormaster, who shall be a resident or registered voter of the City, unless a residency waiver is granted pursuant to local residency Ordinances. Said appointment shall be for a term of not more than five years. Said Mayor may remove said Harbormaster after opportunity for a hearing. Said Mayor shall authorize the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission to establish an employment contract with the Harbormaster establishing salary, benefits and all other conditions of employment.

SECTION 2. The Mayor of the City of New Bedford, with the approval of the City Council of the City of New Bedford, may reappoint an existing Harbormaster for a term of not more than five years. Said reappointment shall be subject to the provisions of Section 1.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect up on passage.
