SECTION 1. Section 1 of chapter 90 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting the following definition:-
“Village center”, a cohesive core of residential, civic, religious, and commercial buildings, arranged along a main street and intersecting streets and designated as a village center by the municipality.
SECTION 2. Section 17 of said chapter 90, as so appearing, is hereby amended by adding a new section “17C” as follows:
Section 17C. Notwithstanding any law or special law to the contrary a city or town that designates an area not greater than one half mile along any main street, whether such street is a state road or highway or a local road, as a village center. Said city or town, at its option, may set the speed limit in a village center at not less than twenty five miles per hour.
SECTION 3, This act shall take effect upon its passage.
