By Mr. McMurtry of Dedham, a petition (accompanied by proposal, House, No. 3359) of Paul McMurtry and others for a legislative amendment to the Constitution relative to increasing the terms of office for Senators and Representatives in the General Court from two years to four years.  Election Laws.

Proposal for a legislative amendment to the Constitution regarding the term length of Representatives and Senators.

 

A majority of all the members elected to the Senate and House of Representatives, in joint session, hereby declares it to be expedient to alter the Constitution by the adoption of the following Article of Amendment, to the end that it may become a part of the Constitution [if similarly agreed to in a joint session of the next General Court and approved by the people at the state election next following]:
 

ARTICLE OF AMENDMENT.
 

SECTION 1. The last sentence of section 1 of  Article 64 of the constitution is hereby amended by striking out the word “third” and inserting in place thereof the word “fifth”.

SECTION 2. Section 3 of said Article 64 is hereby amended by striking out the words “, senators and representatives”.

SECTION 3.  Said section 3 of said Article 64 is hereby further amended by adding the following sentence:-  For senators and representatives elections shall be held quadrennially on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November beginning on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November in the year 2020.
