An Act regarding the penalties for drag racing.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

The second paragraph of section 17B of chapter 90 of the General Laws, as added by section 8 of chapter 428 of the acts of 2006, is hereby amended by striking out the first two sentences and inserting in place thereof the following two sentences:-  Notwithstanding the penalties provided in the first paragraph, a holder of a junior operator's license or learner's permit who commits a violation of this section shall be punished for a first offense by imprisonment in the house of correction for not more than 2 1/2 years or by a fine of not less than $250 and not more than $1,000 and the registrar shall suspend the junior operator's license or learner's permit for 1 year.  A subsequent violation shall be punished by imprisonment in the house of correction for not more than 2 1/2 years or by a fine of not less than $500 and not more than $1,000 and the registrar shall suspend the junior operator's license or learner's permit for 3 years.
