An Act relative to increasing hotel and motel safety.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

Section 21D of chapter 143 of General Laws is hereby amended by adding the following paragraph:-

All newly constructed and substantially renovated motels, as defined in section 32A of chapter 140, hotel or inn, which is kept, used or advertised as, or held out to the public to be, a place where sleeping or housekeeping accommodations are supplied for pay to guests for transient occupancy  shall equip such rooms, sleeping or housekeeping accommodations with an auxiliary emergency lighting system at a height no greater than 18 inches above the floor, independent of the conventional lighting system, lighted sign indicating both a primary and secondary means of egress by a diagram or symbol so as to assure recognition by all persons, regardless of their English-speaking ability indicating both a primary and secondary means of egress by a diagram or symbol so as to assure recognition by all persons, regardless of their English-speaking ability. These signs will be in addition to, not a replacement of, the standard placement of lighted signs indicating primary and secondary means of egress.
