An Act relative to civic education in public schools.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

Chapter 71 of the General Laws is hereby amended by adding the following section:-

The department of elementary and secondary education shall develop a model curriculum, which shall be included within the history and/or social science curriculum. The topics addressed shall include: (i) the history of voting as a constitutional right; (ii) the process of registering to vote, with explanations of registration deadlines and election day education, the initiative petition and referendum process and the overall election process, including descriptions of the various elected offices and their terms; (iii) the makeup and role of the 3 branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial and the 3 levels of government: local, state, and federal government; (iv) the history of political movements and current events, and (v) civic related, service-learning projects. The department shall establish standards to evaluate this curriculum and thereafter create a pilot program to be implemented for school districts.
