An Act relative to equalizing public school transportation fees.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

BILL text: A proposal to equalize transportation fees for Public School Students

Definitions

"school transportation fee"  A fee that may be charged to students to ride busses to school in a municipality, as permitted under the provisions of MGL chapter 71 section 68

"qualifying municipality" A city or town that sends five or more students to a regional vocational school, and which charges a school transportation fee to students in the regular day in district school program.

Chapter 71 of MGL is amended to add a new section (Chapter 98) as follows:

"every regional vocational school that busses students from a qualifying municipality must collect a fee for bus transportation from all students who are bussed from that town. That fee shall be equal to the fees charged to the in-district students.

The funds collected from this fee would be remitted to the town where the fee payers reside, and would be appropriated exclusively to cover school transportation costs for that town.

The fees would be assessed by June 30th  of each year for the following school year. The funds must be transferred to the qualifying municipality by October 30th.
