_______________
An Act relative to public safety related to Blue Hills Trail Crossings Route 28 and Route 138 in Milton.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation, hereinafter the department, shall, within 60 days of the effective date of this act, conduct a traffic study across state highway route 138 and state highway route 28, at the locations where the skyline hiking trail at the Blue Hills Reservation crosses said highways, to determine the need for additional traffic safety measures in such locations, including whether establishing pedestrian crosswalks and erecting pedestrian crossing signs with flashing lights and reflectors in such locations would significantly improve the safety conditions of the trail crossings at said highways.
If the department finds, after such traffic study, that such safety measures would significantly improve the safety conditions of the trail crossings at said highways, the department shall, within 30 days of such finding, establish pedestrian crosswalks across state highway route 138 and state highway route 28, at the locations where the skyline hiking trail at the Blue Hills Reservation crosses said highways, and shall erect and maintain pedestrian crossing signs with flashing lights and reflectors, and any other suitable markers the department determines are necessary to ensure pedestrian and driver safety near such crosswalks, in compliance with the standards of said department.
