Barber and others for legislation to identify possible funding to establish a transportation program for families visiting correctional institutions.  The Judiciary.

An Act relative to transportation for visitors of DOC and HOC facilities.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Said chapter 124 is hereby further amended by adding the following section:-

Section 11. The commissioner of corrections or a designee, and a member of the Massachusetts sheriffs’ association or a designee, in consultation when appropriate with the department of children and families for addressing the specific needs for children of inmates in custody of the department of children and families, shall:

Identify funding streams for, but not limited to, transportation network services, as defined in chapter 159A½, to offer transportation, such as bus, train or taxi for visiting family members and their children, and establish an equitable system to offer vouchers to visitors.

The Department shall submit a report of its findings and make recommendations, including any proposed legislation, with the clerks of the house of representatives and the senate, the chairs of the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities, the chairs of the Caucus of Women Legislators Task Force on Justice Involved Women, the chair of the Panel on Justice-Involved Women pursuant to chapter 69, section 223 of the Acts of 2018 not later than December 31, 2021.
