An Act relative to escalator safety.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Section 71E of Chapter 143 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting the following definition:

“Escalator”, a moving staircase consisting of an endlessly circulating belt of steps driven by a motor, conveying people between different levels of elevation.

SECTION 2. Section 71E of Chapter 143 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting in line 4 following the word “conveyors”, the word “escalators”.

SECTION 3. Section 68 of Chapter 143 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting in line 4 following the word “elevators”, the word “escalators”.

SECTION 4. Chapter 149 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting in line 22 of Section 6 after the word “employees” the following paragraph:

A yellow caution strip on the front edge of a step for its entire length, being at least three inches in width, shall be applied to each step of an escalator. Yellow caution strips shall be applied to all escalators in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that are constructed after this act is in effect, and to any escalators constructed prior to passage of this act following the escalator’s next step replacement or at any time that an individual step must be replaced from the original mechanism.
