An Act protecting veterans and children of those officers and firefighters that gave their last full measure.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Section 51 of chapter 31 of the 2016 Official Edition of the General Laws is hereby amended by adding the following paragraph:-

Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, a city or town must maintain in perpetuity the hiring preferences for veterans and surviving children of police officers and fire fighters who have died in the line of duty for all positions that become exempt from the provisions of this chapter; provided further that no such exemption may apply to this paragraph.

SECTION 2. Section 6 of said chapter 31 is amended by adding the following paragraph:-

Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, no applicant for an appointment to a position identified in this chapter may be rejected from such position without a written letter explaining the reasons for being rejected.
