An Act relative to witness fees for retired police officers.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Section 51 of Chapter 262 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2016 Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting after the word “of”, in line 1, the following words:- retired police officers or.

SECTION 2. Section 53A of Chapter 262 of the General Laws, as so appearing, is hereby amended by inserting after the word “fifty-three” in line 2, the following words:- or any retired police officer named in section 53D.

SECTION 3. Section 53A of Chapter 262 of the General Laws, as so appearing, is hereby further amended by inserting after the word “each” in line 8, the following words:- retired police officer or.

SECTION 4. Chapter 262 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 53C the following section:-

Section 53D. Any retired police officer who attends as a witness in a criminal case pending in a district court, including the municipal court of the city of Boston, or in a juvenile court, including Boston juvenile court, shall be allowed a witness fee in the amount of $50 for each day’s attendance. Any retired police officer who attends as a witness in a criminal case pending in a district court, including the municipal court of the city of Boston, or in a juvenile court, including Boston juvenile court, and who by reason of a continuance or postponement thereof, is required to again attend, shall be paid the amount of $50 for each day of such further attendance. Any retired police officer who attends the superior court as a witness for the commonwealth shall be paid a witness fee in the amount of $50 for each day's attendance.
