An Act relative to change the name of the board of selectmen of the town of Billerica to select board to exhibit gender neutrality.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
SECTION 1. The charter of the town of Billerica, which is on file in the office of the archivist of the commonwealth, as provided in section 12 of chapter 43B of the General Laws, is hereby amended by replacing the terms “board of selectmen”, “board of selectman”, “board” or “selectmen”, appearing in a context where reference is made to the entire board of selectmen, with the following term:- select board.
SECTION 2. Said charter is hereby further amended to replace any reference to individual members of the board of selectmen with the following term:- select board member.
SECTION 3. Subsection (b) of section 3-2 of said charter is hereby amended by adding the following paragraph:-
Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the executive office of the town of Billerica, previously known as the board of selectmen, shall be known as the select board, and shall have all of the powers and duties of a board of selectmen as provided in the general or special laws or in the charter of the town of Billerica, except as otherwise provided in said charter.
SECTION 4. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
