To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives,

Pursuant to the provisions of Article II, Section 8, Paragraph 1, Clause (2) of the Amendments to the Constitution, as appearing in Article LXXXIX of said Amendments, I am filing for your consideration the attached legislation entitled “An Act Authorizing the Town of Scituate to Establish the Date of its Annual Town Election.”

I am filing this special legislation at the request of the Scituate Board of Selectmen.

The legislation will permit the Town to reschedule its 2020 Town Election from the currently scheduled date, which falls over Memorial Day weekend in May, to a date in June that would avoid potential complications associated with the holiday weekend.  Timing considerations do not permit the Town to pursue this change through normal procedures.

An Act authorizing the town of Scituate to establish the date of its annual town election.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law or town by-law to the contrary, the annual town election for the town of Scituate shall be held on June 13, 2020.  The establishment of such date for the election shall not change the deadlines which would be otherwise applicable as set forth in the candidate nomination papers.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
