An Act relative to supporting families dealing with sudden infant death syndrome.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Chapter 38 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2016 Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting, after section 4A, the following section:-

Section 4B. (a) Upon determination that sudden infant death syndrome is the presumed cause of death, the office shall immediately contact the parents, guardians, and person who had custody of the child, including foster parents, when applicable, to provide to that person or persons information, support, referral, and follow-up services relating to sudden infant death syndrome, including, but not limited to, those offered by the Massachusetts center for sudden infant death syndrome located at Boston Medical Center.

(b) The office, in consultation with the state and local multidisciplinary child fatality review teams and other parties as deemed necessary, shall develop printed materials containing the information required in subsection (a) to be distributed to the person or persons who had custody and control of the infant who died with sudden infant death syndrome the presumed cause of death.
