An Act establishing a Massachusetts Cold War victory medal.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

Chapter 33 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after Section 67A the following section:-

Section 67B. (a) The governor, in consultation with the adjutant general, may issue a medal to persons eligible under subsection (b).

(b) There shall be a Massachusetts Cold War Victory Medal, which shall be awarded to any member or former member of the armed forces of this state or of the United States who meets the following criteria: (i) a person who served in the ranks of the armed forces between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991, inclusive; and (ii) a person who was a resident of this state at the time he or she entered military service.

(c) A person qualified for the Massachusetts Cold War Victory Medal by subsection (b) may only be awarded 1 Massachusetts Cold War Victory Medal for the entirety of the period of eligibility.

(d) If a person qualifying for the Massachusetts Cold War Victory Medal required by subsection (b) is deceased, the Massachusetts Cold War Victory Medal may be presented to the next-of-kin of that person.

(e) Upon the establishment and authorization of a federal Cold War Medal or its equivalent, the authorization for the Massachusetts award shall be rescinded and the federal award shall be awarded and worn in its place in accordance with the guidelines established for that award.
