An Act designating a certain intersection in the town of Duxbury as the Charlotte Bradford Memorial Square.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

The intersection of Tremont Street, Route 3A, and St. George Street, in the town of Duxbury shall be designated and known as Charlotte Bradford Square, in honor of Charlotte Bradford, a pioneering Civil War nurse and social reformer from the town of Duxbury.

Ms. Bradford served as a nurse during the Civil War, where she worked on transport ships bringing wounded soldiers from the front lines. Later, she served as a nurse in military hospitals in Virginia and Washington, D.C. and as the matron of the U.S. Sanitary Commission's Soldier's Home, and the Home for Wives and Mothers. As matron, Bradford provided nursing and social services for thousands of women and children who descended on the militarized capital, searching for the sick and dead casualties of war. She served nearly the entirety of the Civil War and was honored after the war for her services. Ms. Bradford died in 1893 and is buried in Duxbury’s Mayflower Cemetery.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation shall erect and maintain suitable markers bearing this designation in compliance with the standards of the department.
