An Act relative to vehicle registration and road safety.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
Section 54C of chapter 175 of the general laws as appearing in the 2020 edition is hereby amended by adding at the end the following:
“Any Company authorized to transact the kinds of business specified in the first or second clause, or in subdivision (b), of the sixth clause of section forty-seven, shall notify the Registry of Motor vehicles immediately upon an instance in which an individuals insurance lapses and becomes invalid. The Registry of Motor Vehicles, upon notification of such lapse and invalidation of insurance shall follow all regulations with respect to the validity of the registration of the vehicle in question and, in addition, shall immediately notify local law enforcement of the lapse in insurance and registration. Upon notification from the Registry of Motor Vehicles, the local law enforcement shall impound the vehicle in question until the owner clears up all issues with their respective insurance companies and the registry of motor vehicles. For purposes of this section the companies authorized to transact in this business shall have one business day to notify the Registry of Motor Vehicles. For purposes of this section the Registry of Motor Vehicles shall have one business day to notify local authorities who in turn shall have one business day from the date of their notification to impound the offending vehicle."
