An Act to invest in local roads.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

The General Laws are hereby amended by inserting after chapter 90J the following chapter:-

Chapter 90K. Local roads improvement program

Section 1. There shall be within the department a local roads improvement program to provide grants to municipalities for improvements to public ways; provided, that funds may be expended for transportation projects including, but not limited to: (i) the rehabilitation, reconstruction, resurfacing or preservation of roadways and appurtenances; (ii) the repair or replacement of traffic control devices, signage, guardrails and storm grates; or (iii) road striping or painting. Funds shall be distributed using a formula based on each municipality’s share of road mileage.

Section 2. Annually not later than October 1, the department shall submit a report to the house and senate committees on ways and means and the joint committee on transportation with respect to grants distributed under this chapter during the prior fiscal year that shall include, but not be limited to: (a) a list of all municipalities that received funding for projects through these grants; (b) the amount of grant funds awarded to each municipality; and (c) a description of the projects implemented in each municipality.
