An Act allowing for temporary license plates.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1.  Section 1 of chapter 423 of the Acts of 2022 is hereby amended by inserting after the word “state”, at the end of subsection (a), the following words:- “; or who (iii) reside in the commonwealth, purchased a private sale vehicle outside of the commonwealth, and plan to return to the state.

SECTION 2. Section 1 of chapter 423 of the Acts of 2022 is hereby further amended by striking out subsection (c) and inserting in place thereof the following:-

(3) Prior to the issuance of temporary plates to a purchaser who resides in the commonwealth, who has purchased a private sale vehicle outside of the commonwealth and plans to return to the state, the purchaser shall furnish to the registrar sufficient proof of: (i) residence in the commonwealth; (ii) a title that has been endorsed over to the purchaser; and (iii) a valid insurance policy.

(c) No person shall make application for a 20-day registration on the same vehicle more than once within a 12-month period. The registrar may approve up to three 20-day registrations for the same vehicle within a 12-month period, provided that each application is submitted by a different person.

(d) The registrar shall recognize all out of state temporary license plates for residents of the commonwealth who have purchased their vehicle outside of the commonwealth and plan to return to the state.

(e) The registrar may issue and enforce regulations for the administration of this section.
