Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the Board of Sewer Commissioners in the Town of Northfield is increased from 3 to 5 members, with the 2 new members to be elected by the voters of the town as provided in Section 2. Upon election and qualification, the new commission members shall have the responsibilities and powers of the present Northfield Board of Sewer Commissioners under applicable law, including, but not limited to chapter 41 and chapter 40N of the General Laws.

SECTION 2. At the next annual town election, the Town of Northfield shall hold an election to fill the positions of the 2 vacant members to the sewer commission. Of the 2 vacant positions, 1 shall be elected for a 2-year term and 1 shall be elected for a 3-year term. The terms of office for the 2 new members of the commission shall commence immediately upon qualification and shall expire at the close of the next annual Northfield town election in accordance with the length of the initial terms of office. Upon the expiration of the initial terms of the new positions, each term of each member thereafter elected shall be a 3-year term.

SECTION 3. This act shall take place upon its passage.
