An Act authorizing the city of Springfield to continue the employment of police officer Lawrence E. Akers.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary but subject to chapter 6E and section 96B of chapter 41 of the General Laws, Lawrence E. Akers, a member of the police department in the city of Springfield, may continue In his position until he reaches 70 years of age, the date of his retirement or until his non-reappointment, whichever occurs first; provided, however, that he Is mentally and physically capable of performing the duties of his position. The city council of the city of Springfield may, at the city's expense, require that Lawrence E. Akers be examined annually by a physician designated by the city council to determine his physical and mental capability to perform the duties of his position. Lawrence E. Akers shall, while continuing to serve as a police officer in the city of Springfield: (i) maintain certification and good standing with the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission; and (ii) comply with all In-service and other training requirements mandated by the municipal police training committee. Deductions from the regular compensation of Lawrence E. Akers shall be made under chapter 32 of the General Laws for any service In connection with his service to the city for retirement or pension purposes after his reaching age 65 and, upon retirement, Lawrence E. Akers shall receive a superannuation retirement allowance.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
