SECTION 1. Chapter 41 of the General Laws is hereby amended by adding the following section:-
Section 134. (a) For the purposes of this section, “public building'” shall mean a building owned by a city or town or in an enclosed indoor space occupied by a city or town which is located in a building not owned by the city or town. A public primary or secondary school building or a public vocational school building shall not be included as public buildings in this section.
(b) A city or town shall, subject to appropriation, in each public building located in that city or town, employ the use of metal detectors or any other similar security devices to prevent a person from bringing dangerous and deadly weapons including, but not limited to, guns and knives or any other contraband into the public building.
(c) A city council, in the case of a city, or a select board or board of selectmen, in the case of a town, shall establish a policy for the implementation and use of such metal detectors or similar security devices in public buildings.
SECTION 2. Chapter 71 of the General Laws is hereby amended by adding the following section:-
Section 100. (a) Each school committee or board of trustees shall, subject to appropriation, in each public primary or secondary school or public vocational school under its control, employ the use of metal detectors or any other similar security devices to prevent a person from bringing dangerous and deadly weapons including, but not limited to, guns and knives or any other contraband into the school.
(b) Each school committee or board of trustees shall establish a policy for the implementation and use of such metal detectors or similar security devices at a school pursuant to subsection (a).
