SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the number of members of the board of sewer commissioners in the town of Northfield shall increase from 3 to 5, with the 2 new members to be elected by the voters of the town as provided in section 2. Upon election and qualification, new members of the board shall have the responsibilities and powers of the current board under applicable law, including, but not limited to, chapter 40N and chapter 41 of the General Laws.
SECTION 2. At the next annual town election, the town of Northfield shall hold an election to fill the position of the 2 vacant members of the board of sewer commissioners. Of the 2 vacant positions, 1 shall be elected for a 2-year initial term and 1 shall be elected for a 3-year initial term. The terms of office for the 2 new members of the board shall commence immediately upon qualification and shall expire in accordance with the length of initial terms of office. Upon the expiration of the initial terms of the new positions, each term of each member thereafter elected shall be a 3-year term.
SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
