An Act relative to the composition of the licensing board for the city of Salem.

 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
 

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding the provisions of section 4 of chapter 138 of the General Laws relative to the number of members that may be appointed to a municipal licensing board to the contrary, the licensing board of the city of Salem shall consist of 3 members and 1 alternate member to be appointed by the mayor, subject to confirmation by the city council. Each member shall be appointed to serve for a term of 3 years and until their successor is chosen and qualified.

SECTION 2. On the effective date of this act, the mayor, subject to confirmation by the city council, shall appoint 1 person to serve as an alternate member of the licensing board, who shall serve for a term of 1 year. Upon the expiration of such initial 1-year term appointed pursuant to this section, successor appointees shall serve for a term of 3 years.

SECTION 3. An alternate member shall serve as regular members of the board whenever any regular member is unable to attend a meeting of the board.

SECTION 4.Those persons serving as members of the licensing board on the effective date of this act shall continue to serve as members thereof for a period of 3 years or until the expiration of their term, whichever period is shorter.
