Voter Verification
Mr. Tarr moves to amend the amendment by inserting, after Section ___, the following new Section:-
“SECTION ___. Section 76 of Chapter 54 of the General Laws is hereby amended by striking the first sentence and inserting the following 2 sentences:-
"(a) Each voter desiring to vote at a polling place shall give to one of the officers at the entrance to the space within the guard rail that voter’s name, residence, and an identification document as provided in subsection (b). A person desiring to vote who fails to present a suitable identification document when so requested by an election officer shall be permitted to vote, but that person’s right to vote may be challenged under section 85.”; and
further by adding in said section 76 of said chapter 54 the following 2 subsections:-
“(b) A person meets the identification document requirements of this section if the person:
(i) presents to the appropriate election officer a current and valid photo identification; or
(ii) presents to the appropriate election officer a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name voter; or
(iii) submit an affidavit attesting to the voters identification and that said voter is eligible to vote in the polling place under the pains and penalties of perjury
(c) A person who desires to vote in person but does not provide a satisfactory identification document may cast a provisional ballot under section 76C.”.
