Caring for Family Members with Disabilities

Representatives McMurtry of Dedham, Ashe of Longmeadow, Benson of Lunenburg, Cabral of New Bedford, Cantwell of Marshfield, Cassidy of Brockton, Collins of Boston, Decker of Cambridge, DuBois of Brockton, Dwyer of Woburn, Farley-Bouvier of Pittsfield, Fiola of Fall River, Garballey of Arlington, Khan of Newton, Lawn of Watertown, Moran of Lawrence, Poirier of North Attleborough, Puppolo of Springfield, Rogers of Cambridge, Rogers of Norwood, Sannicandro of Ashland, Schmid of Westport, Toomey of Cambridge and Walsh of Framingham move to amend the bill by inserting the following new section:

SECTION XX.  Subsection (e) of chapter 110 of chapter 5 of the acts of 1995, as amended by section 24 of chapter 158 of the acts of 2014, is hereby amended by striking out clause 2 of said subsection (e) and inserting in place thereof the following words: --(2) recipients who must care for one or more of the following disabled persons: (i) a child, (ii) the recipient’s spouse, sibling or half-sibling, (iii) the child’s other parent, or (iv) a parent or grandparent of the recipient, of  the recipient’s spouse or of the child’s other parent.  A recipient who requests an exemption under this clause to care for a child or spouse shall apply for SSI benefits on behalf of the disabled person if the recipient has legal authority to do so.
