Promoting safe firearm storage education

Messrs. Lewis and Feeney, Ms. Rausch and Mr. Tarr move that the proposed new text be amended by adding the following section:-

"SECTION X. Chapter 71 of the General Laws is hereby amended by adding the following section:-

Section 99. (a) The Department shall develop model content for the safe storage of firearms in consultation with the executive office of public safety and security for school districts, as defined by section 2 of chapter 70, in order for the districts to disseminate that content to families. Said model content shall include information for parents or guardians of students regarding the importance of secure gun storage to protect minors from accessing firearms, the risks of access to firearms, secure firearm storage requirements, and suicide prevention and other behavioral health resources.

(b) The office of the superintendent of each school district, as defined by section 2 of chapter 70, shall annually distribute the model content developed pursuant to subsection (a) to parents or guardians who have students enrolled in the school district and make said information electronically accessible on the district’s webpage."
