Amendment #1340 to H5500

Sheriffs Reimbursement Commission

Representatives Jones of North Reading, Ferguson of Holden, Frost of Auburn, Muradian of Grafton, Vieira of Falmouth and Smola of Warren moves to amend the bill by inserting the following sections:

 

“SECTION XXXX. There shall be established a commission to study the reimbursement of sheriffs’ offices in the commonwealth. The commission’s study shall include, but not be limited to, the efficacy of quarterly reimbursements to sheriffs’ offices, costs driving sheriff budget deficits, including state mandated medically assisted treatment, as well as ways to decrease the cost of post-arrest stabilization of inmates experiencing withdrawals and other acute medical and behavioral needs.

 

SECTION XXXX. The commission shall consist of: the joint chairs of public safety, who shall serve as co-chairs; 1 member appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives; 1 member appointed by the president of the senate;1 member appointed by the minority leader of the house of representatives; 1 member appointed by the minority leader of the senate; the secretary of public safety and security or their designee; the president of the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association or their designee; and the inspector general or their designee.

 

SECTION XXXX. The commission shall submit its report, along with any recommendations, to the clerk’s office of the house of representatives and the senate no later than 1 year after the effective date of this act.”
