Ensuring DESE Focuses on Consistent Implementation when Developing Recommendations, Guidance, and Model Policy
Messrs. Velis, Cronin and Collins move that the proposed new draft be amended in section 1, by inserting after line 22, the following:-
“(iv) recognition that the educational and social benefits of device restrictions are amplified through consistent implementation across schools and diminished when individual schools or districts create substantial exceptions that allow routine device access during school hours”;
and further, in section 1, by inserting after line 32, the following:-
“(3) Any exemptions or modifications to the prohibition shall be narrowly construed and implemented in a manner that preserves the statewide uniformity essential to achieving the policy's public health and educational objectives. The effectiveness of limiting personal electronic device use depends upon consistent application across schools and districts to prevent the social and peer pressure dynamics that undermine individual school policies.”;
and further, in line 33, by striking out “(3)”, and inserting in place thereof:- “(4)”.
