Transparency in Reporting on challenges at school libaries

Mr. Tarr, Mrs. Dooner and Messrs. Moore and Fattman move that the proposed new draft be amended by striking lines 40-42 in its entirety and inserting in place thereof the following:-

"Annually, school districts, charter schools and local education agencies shall submit a report to the department, such report shall also be posted on the district’s website in a format accessible to the public and distributed to parents and guardians of enrolled students through existing communication channels, including electronic mail or parent portals. The report shall include: (i) the number of challenges filed; (ii) the titles and authors of the materials challenged; (iii) the basis of each challenge; and (iv) the outcome of each challenge, including whether the material was retained, restricted, or removed from its schools during the previous calendar year.

The department shall compile the reports submitted under this section into a cumulative statewide report. Not later than December 31 of each year, the department shall submit the cumulative report to the clerks of the house of representatives and senate and to the joint committee on education. The cumulative report shall also be posted on the department’s website in a format accessible to the public."
