Parental Notification of a challenge

Mr. Tarr, Mrs. Dooner and Mr. Fattman move that the proposed new draft be amended by inserting in line 10 after subsection (a) the following new subsection:

"(a 1/2). Upon receipt of a challenge to library materials, the school district shall provide, to the maxim extend feasible, affected notice to parents and guardians of enrolled students in a timely manner, including the title of the challenged material and the process for review";

By inserting in line 13 after the words, "school personnel," the following:- "and at least 2 parents or guardians of students enrolled in the district"; and

By inserting after Section 82C the following new section:-

"SECTION 82D. Each school district, charter school and local education agency shall require that each school library's existing electronic catalog, whether locally hosted or web-based, clearly indicate the intended age or grade level designation for each book or other material in the collection. Such designation shall be based on professional standards of library science and educational practice, and shall be visible to students, parents, guardians, and school personnel when searching or browsing the catalog. The catalog shall be updated as new materials are acquired or reclassified, and the age or grade level designation shall be included as a searchable field."
