Sudden Unexplained Death Syndrome SUDS
Ms. Lovely, Ms. Howard and Mr. Tarr move that the proposed new text be amended in section 14, in section 1 of chapter 18C, by adding the following definition:-
“Sudden unexplained pediatric death”, the sudden and unexpected death of an infant or child under the age of 3, where the cause of death cannot be determined before an investigation.”;
in section 16, by striking out, in line 495, the word “and”;
in said section 16, by inserting after the word “practices”, in line 498, the following words:- “; and
(i) create and maintain information and a list of publicly available resources for parents who have experienced a sudden unexplained pediatric death; provided, however, that such information shall include, but not be limited to, resources to obtain genetic testing, ongoing bereavement support, counseling and grief support”;
by inserting after section 23 the following section:-
“SECTION 23A. Said section 5 of said chapter 18C, as so appearing, is hereby further amended by inserting after the word “services” in lines 43 and 44 the following words:- , access to support for parents of a child who have experienced a sudden unexplained pediatric death.”;
and in section 34, in proposed section 16 of chapter 18C, by adding the following subsection:-
“(h) In the case of a sudden unexplained pediatric death, the office shall provide the caregivers of the deceased with information and a list of publicly available resources for those who have experienced a sudden unexplained pediatric death in accordance with clause (i) of the first paragraph of section 2 of chapter 18C. The office shall provide such information and list as close to the time of incident as practicable.”.
