AN ACT PROVIDING FOR BIENNIAL AND ANNUAL MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS IN THE CITY OF TAUNTON.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives
in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same,
SECTION 1. Chapter 448 of the acts of 1909 is hereby amended by
striking out section 1, as amended by section 1 of chapter 55 of the acts of
1948, and inserting in place thereof the following section:-
Section 1. Beginning with the year nineteen hundred and ninety-five,
biennial municipal elections in the city of Taunton for the choice of mayor,
and annual municipal elections for the choice of members of the school
committee, municipal council, planning board, zoning board of appeals and
Taunton lighting plant commission shall be held on the Tuesday next following
the first Monday in November in every odd numbered year and on the date set
for state wide elections in every even numbered year.
SECTION 2. Said chapter 448 is hereby further amended by striking
out section 3, as amended by section 1 of chapter 407 of the acts of
1941, and inserting in place thereof the following section:-
Section 3. The municipal officers to be elected at city elections shall
be the mayor; members of a single council, to consist of nine members, to be
called the municipal council; members of the school committee; members of the
planning board; members of the zoning board of appeals; and members of the
Taunton municipal lighting plant commission.
SECTION 3. Said chapter 448 is hereby further amended by striking
out section 5, as amended by section 1 of said chapter 407, and inserting in
place thereof the following section:-
Section 5. On the fourth Tuesday preceding every biennial, annual, or
special city election at which any officer mentioned in section four is to be
elected, there shall be held a preliminary election or caucus for the purpose
of nominating candidates for such offices as, under the provisions of this act,
are to be filled at such biennial, annual, or special city election.
SECTION 4. This act shall be submitted for acceptance to the voters
of the city of Taunton at the biennial municipal election in the year nineteen
hundred and ninety-three in the form of the following question, which shall be
placed upon the official ballot to be used in said city at said election:-
"Shall an act passed by the general court in the year nineteen hundred and
ninety-three, entitled 'An Act providing for biennial and annual municipal
in the city of Taunton', be accepted " If a majority of the votes in answer to
said question is in the affirmative, then this act shall thereupon take full
effect but not otherwise.
SECTION 5. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
