Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives
in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same,
SECTION 1. Section 4 of chapter 448 of the acts of 1909, as amended by section 2 of chapter 407 of the acts of 1941, is hereby further amended by striking out, in line 5, the words "nine councilmen".
SECTION 2. Said section 4 of said chapter 448 is hereby further amended by adding the following three sentences:- In the year nineteen hundred and ninety-five there shall be elected nine councilmen. The three candidates receiving the largest number of votes for councilman shall be elected for a term of three years, the three candidates receiving the next largest number of votes for a term of two years, and the three candidates receiving the next largest number of votes for a term of one year. At the annual municipal election in nineteen hundred and ninety-six and every year thereafter, there shall be elected three councilmen for a term of three years.
SECTION 3. This act shall be submitted to the voters of the city of Taunton at the city election to be held in the year nineteen hundred and ninety-three in the form of the following question, which shall be placed upon the official ballot to be used for the election of city officers at said election:
"Shall an act passed by the general court in the year nineteen hundred and ninety-three, entitled 'An Act providing for staggered terms for members of the municipal council of the city of Taunton', be accepted ".
If a majority of the votes cast in answer to said question is in the affirmative then the act shall take full effect, but not otherwise.
SECTION 4. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
